Seiko's Ultimate diver, SLD005P

Overwhelmed by its sheer weight and size, the Seiko SLD005p takes the crown for the largest watch I've ever put on my wrist till date. It measures up to a whopping 52mm. The fact that little people knows about this amazing diver shows that Seiko has a great multitude of amazing wrist watches to offer yet to be discovered by the general public of watch fanatics.

This remarkable instrument for divers was infused with technology and beauty. Back in the late 90s where this watch pushed into the market, most diver watches at that point of time was digital. However, Seiko decided to redesign it into an analog watch with the 7k52 japanese quartz movement.

(look at that stunning sapphire crystal)

A first look at this gorgeous piece would normally have people end up wondering which hand tells the time because this particular watch has 9 hands.

2 out of the 9 hands will tell you the time. The rest of the 7 will save your life while you under the rough seas.

Besides being the first Quartz diver to automatically register your diving depth as you go deeper, it also tells you your diving duration, as well as an alarm to make sure you surface at an acceptable speed

It also helps to keep track of the maximum depth reached during the dive. What more can you actually expect from a diver's watch?

This well built watch with well placed lume markers will serve any diver well and optimise their ability to make judgements underwater. I think they made a great move but making the markers smaller than their usual watches to prevent over clustering on the dial.

(The round thing in the middle of the two push buttons is also known as the depth sensor)

Automatically measuring up to 59m deep, this is basically everything a professional diver need. This truly is an example of functional beauty.

Overall, the SLD005P is a great casual watch besides the issue with the hefty weight. Would have been better if it was titanium case in my opinion. Nevertheless, the stainless steel case with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces looks amazing.

This piece is a pretty rare vintage in the market right now. Its quite hard to get it with the complete set with a box and the rubber strap. If you're a serious collector, you shouldn't miss out on the chance to get it when you can. However, be warned that the price range for this piece is all over the place. But I feel that anywhere from 1100SGD-1200SGD is a decent price tag.

If you're planning to get this stunning piece, make sure you try to get it in a fancy yellow plastic Seiko box where it comes with a rubber strap as well as a tapered steel bracelet which fits the watch very well. If you paying more than 1200 SGD for an incomplete set, you're probably paying too much for it.

Since this gorgeous vintage diver doesn't have a nickname yet, I think it should be named the Seiko Sledge hammer. One reason for the name is the model number SLD which looks like the short form for sledge and I personally added the hammer because I feel that this watch packs a punch with its sheer size and weight.

  1. This piece is indeed unknown to most. You wrote this back in 2015, i happen to stumble upon your blog when I was looking for 7k52 today as there is really not much information or reviews about this watch. I am actually interested in the other one which is made of titanium, SBCP001. I think that one, besides a guy who sold 2 and made a youtube review about it, thats about the information i can find on the www. Anyway, wonder how the watch hold up for you? have you dive with it?
