Have Smart watches surpassed your good old Mechanical ones?

2015 was the year that smart watches taken flight. Started in 2001, The first few smart watches out in the market lacked integration with our daily lifestyle devices and hence have been generally unpopular amongst the general public back then.

Today, smart watches have not only integrated with our lifestyle devices but our daily activities as well. They have proved to be functional and a form of luxurious convenience to our lives.

I'm not here to talk about smart watches today but I'm actually here to do the comparison based on the recent major happenings in the watch market.

It all started with the launch of the apple watch that shook up the entire watch community. A watch with a small LED screen that is controlled either by twisting the crown or touching the small screen. Knowing that Apple phones is the choice of many consumers worldwide, the theoretical figure of consumers buying the apple watch as well is clearly astronomical.

Convinced that they are not going to let apple gain all the profits off the mainstream consumer's wrist wear, Samsung came up with Samsung gear S2. Controlled by the bezel, I've tried it in person in a store and I feel that the controls are pretty fluid. Personally, I feel that the idea of using the bezel as means to control the information display of the watch a better idea that the crown.

Joining the heated competition is the unexpected Tag Heuer. Never have I thought that Tag Heuer with a long legacy of traditional watch making would succumb to join the bandwagon.

Supposedly having a greater plan to lure smart watch users over to the mechanical side, Tag Heuer attempts to entice consumers by giving them a choice to top up 1500 bucks after 2 years to get a mechanical Carrera.

To me, it just feels like they are admitting defeat to the legion of smartwatches and throwing the reputation of their established brand into the sea. There is just no way for a single company to have two focuses and excel in both.

Imagine Apple or Samsung offering high end Swiss movement time pieces while simultaneously developing their smart watches. It just doesn't happen.

To me, a smart watch can never be compared to many iconic pieces such as the Jager lecoutre Reverso and the Omega Speed master.

The amount of complexity and and precision that goes into these pieces cannot be replaced by having a tiny phone on your wrist.

The smart watch hype prevails as Apple and Samsung continues to throw millions into marketing but I strongly believe that your Mechanical/quartz analogue watch will emerge victorious eventually in the years to come.

Even in the unexpected event where the historical mechanical watches legion come to an end, the Japanese/ Swiss movement watch you have on your wrist will be an antique which will amaze generations to come.
